Synopsis:
Rang de Basanti  is a film about awakening. About standing up for ones beliefs, where the spirit of rebellion transcends time and age. A young idealic English filmmaker, Sue (Alice Payton), arrives in India to make a film on Indian revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad and their contemporaries and their fight for freedom from the British Raj.

Sue, aided by Sonia (Soha Ali Khan), meets a group of friends, in whom she sees the characters of her documentary. The group consists of DJ (Aamir Khan), who passed out of college five years back, but still wants to be a part of the University because he doesn't think there's much out there in the real world to look forward to.

Karan (Siddharth), is the son of Industrial Rajnath Singhania (Anupam Kher), who shares an uncomfortable relationship with his father. Aslam (Kunal Kapoor), is a middle class Muslim boy, who lives in the by lanes near Jama Masjid. He is a poet, philosopher and guide to his friends.

Sukhi (Sharman Joshi), is the group's baby, innocent, vulnerable and with a weakness for only one thing - girls. Laxman Pandey (Atul Kulkarni), the fundamental in the group, the only one who still believes that politics can make the world a better place and Ajay (Madhavan), who is engaged to Sonia and is a pilot in the Indian Air Force.

None of the friends is serious enough to be a part of Sue's documentary. To them values like patriotism, sacrificing oneself for the sake of country are just beautiful words they cannot relate to. Ajay is the only one who believes in Patriotism and dedicates his service to the country.

But one incident changes their lives forever - Ajay dies in a MiG crash and is labeled as a rookie pilot by the Defence Minister, who is unwilling to accept shortcomings in the MiG aircrafts. Unable to watch Ajay's reputation being tarnished by false accusations, DJ, Aslam, Karan, Sukhi, Sonia, Ajay's mother (Waheeda Rahman) and Pandey, lead a protest march, to get Ajay the honour he deserves.

The result is that, they are beaten mercilessly by the cops. DJ and friends decide to bring the truth to light. But they choose a extreme way to do it.
